We can
forget about pickups being largely commercial work vehicles these days, and that
means manufacturers have to be well aware of the fact they now need to appeal
to a much wider audience than perhaps they once used to. Over recent years
there's been a significant amount of updating of our most popular trucks, and
the 2019 Ram 1500 is the latest to enter an
entirely new generation. There are currently six trim levels to choose from in
the range, and here it's the Big Horn
trim were going to concentrate on. That's because it's the most affordable model
after the workmanlike, entry level Tradesman, and therefore likely to be a
popular choice with a lot of buyers.
Exterior styling
Although Ram has changed the way its full-size, light-duty 1500 looks with this new generation, it's still instantly recognizable as a Ram and could hardly be anything else. For some tastes though this new version of the truck might be a little too subtle, a little less distinctive and not bold enough. And to be honest, it's undeniable that you'd be missing out if you didn't take a look and drive one for yourself. And for those who don't appreciate this more modern and cohesive styling language there will be plenty more who might have overlooked a Ram 1500 for sale previously, who might now be happy to give one a go. The Tradesman remains the no-frills workhorse of the 1500 family, so the Big Horn is the first model in the family where striking chrome accents appear instead of the more commercial-friendly black plastic. The front fascia of the Ram now seems to squint rather than roar, but the new design has the benefit of being considerably more aerodynamic and contemporary than the model it replaces.
Engines
The standard engine throughout the 2019 Ram 1500 lineup is still the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, but this time it's a significantly updated version. It now boasts a mild-hybrid system Ram is calling eTorque, which uses a belt-drive motor generator unit with a 48-volt battery and features a start/stop function, short-term torque assist and brake energy regeneration. The newly updated engine produces 305 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque, which is 90 lb.-ft. more than before eTorque came along. And if that's still not enough for your requirements, the Big Horn is also available with a 5.7-liter V-8 with an extra 130 lb.-ft. this year, which is once again, courtesy of the eTorque system.
Features and equipment
Every 2019 Ram 1500 still gets its own grille to distinguish itself from other models in the range, and one on the Big Horn features a chrome surround and black billet inserts with chrome Ram letters. The Big Horn also comes with standard fog lights, 18-inch wheels, air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth phone connectivity, Uconnect 3 infotainment with a 5.0-inch screen, USB inputs and audio controls mounted on the steering wheel.
Capability
Regardless of what you intend to use it for a pickup truck has to have a large dose of capability. So, when correctly configured, the maximum a Ram 1500 Big Horn can haul is as much as 2,300 pounds, and the maximum tow rating is up to 12,750 pounds. Plus, there's plenty of rear legroom for when you have to reach those work jobs that require more than one person.
