If you want a big helping of the style and swagger of a Grand Cherokee is a smaller and more affordable SUV package, but you still want the option of your new crossover being able to more than hold its own off-road, look no further than the Jeep Compass. Larger than a Renegade but smaller than a Cherokee, the 2019 Jeep Compass could be something of a sweet spot in a crowded market of compact SUVs. Here's a little more about what this family of compact Jeep SUVs has to offer.
Exterior styling
There's no doubt whatsoever when you see it that the Compass is a Jeep. It's sleek, modern styling may be a long way from the traditional ruggedness of the Wrangler, but it's easy to make comparison with the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, and there's nothing wrong with that whatsoever. That familiar seven-slot grille is and squinting headlights at either side are the defining Jeep signature front fascia, and although the look is very modern, the roofline doesn't slope like so many these days, so rear headroom isn't impaired.
Trim levels
Buyers certainly have plenty of options for tailoring their Jeep Compass to their own requirements, and it all starts with seven different trim levels. The range starts off with the compass Sport, and then the lineup goes to the Latitude, Upland, Altitude, Trailhawk, Limited and the High Altitude. If you don't want the option of all-wheel drive and you're happy with front-wheel drive, the Upland is replaced by a trim called Sun & Wheel, and the AWD-only Trailhawk isn't available with two-wheel drive.
Powertrains
Life can sometimes get a little complicated for buyers when there are a lot of trim levels and more than one engine to choose from, but Jeep is keeping it simple here with every Compass coming standard with the same engine. That engine is a 2.4-liter inline-four that produces 180 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque. The base transmission to go with it is a six-speed manual, although with Latitude and Limited trims the standard unit is a six-speed automatic. However, most models you're likely to come across will be fitted with a nine-speed automatic.

Features and equipment
Base Sport models come standard with 16-inch wheels, keyless ignition, cloth upholstery, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, a couple of USB chargers, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible. For its relatively low price, the Compass Sport is an appealing package. However, even the Limited won't exactly break the bank, and it then gets you 18-inch alloy wheels, a futuristic 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, leather upholstery, an 8.4-inch touchscreen for the infotainments system, remote start, and heated seats in the front.
Fuel economy
Fuel economy probably isn't the number one attribute buyers in this segment are looking for, but it will be higher up on their agenda than it might be with a larger model. The most fuel-efficient version of the Compass is one with front-wheel drive and the six-speed manual transmission, and the EPA rates those variants at 23 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined.*
