It's easy to forget what SUVs used to be all about sometimes when we see some models looking a lot like tall wagons these days, and some not even offering the option of all-wheel drive. Of course, not everyone who buys an SUV is into hardcore off-roading, but it's nice to know your SUV crossover can cope with a bit of the rough stuff, even if it's just some really bad weather on the road in winter. Jeep is a brand which has stayed true to its SUV roots, even though it's adapted as much as any brand to accommodate every type of SUV and crossover buyer we have today. The Jeep Cherokee is a great example of city and town-friendly compact SUVs that can also be specified to be very capable off-road, so let's take a closer look at the 2019 Jeep Cherokee in a little detail.

Styling

There's no disputing the fact the Cherokee looks quite a lot like a shrunken Grand Cherokee, but it's hard to see that being anything other than a very good thing indeed. This year the exterior styling has been updated with a new look that's more cohesive and even more like the Grand Cherokee than its predecessor. The now standard LED headlights include the daytime running lights as part of the same unit, with standard fog lights now sitting lower in the corners of the Cherokee's front fascia. The seven-slat front grille is still familiar, but the whole thing has just been made to look a little bit more contemporary from every angle.

Powertrain

Three engines make up the Cherokee engine portfolio this year and the first two will be pretty familiar to most observers. The base unit is the 2.4-liter four-cylinder developing 180 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque, and next up in the family is a 3.2-liter V-6 offering 271 horsepower and 239 lb.-ft. of torque. New for this year is an exciting new addition in the shape of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which then puts a lively 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque at the compact crossover's disposal. Front-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission are standard, but the all-wheel drive that's standard on Trailhawk models is available across the range.

Interior

Forget about the hose-down interior of some Wranglers; the interior of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is much more civilized and comfortable. The rear seats slides backwards and forwards for extra versatility, and the quality of materials used inside the cabin are excellent. In fact, the whole cabin is a level above most of the Cherokee's natural rivals and makes it one of the best compact SUVs out there right now. It has to be said that the interior is a lot more upscale than some might imagine and higher trim levels touch upon luxury levels of opulence.

Safety

A full set of safety ratings for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee aren't available yet, but it should fare well thanks to a generous amount of standard and available safety kit. All trim levels get eight airbags, a rearview camera, hill-start assist, and trailer sway control, and blind-spot monitors and rear cross-path detection are standard equipment for Limited, Overland, and Trailhawk trim levels.
