If it really wanted to, FCA could go all out and totally redesign the Chrysler 300 as an entirely new car for a new era and a new type of customer. But that would be going against everything that makes the car what is and would risk throwing away the enduring appeal of this impressive model. That doesn't, however, mean this big, brash piece of unadulterated Americana can't be updated and improved upon from time to time, because it can. Chrysler did that for the luxury sedan for the 2018 model year, and as the 2019 Chrysler 300 isn't going to stray from last year's formula, let's take a look at what it has to offer.

Latest updates

A new Touring trim level was added last year so the lineup now comprises of the Touring, Touring-L, 300S, Limited and the top-of-the-range 300C. Entry level Touring models feature standard 17-inch alloy wheels, while 20s adorn the top-of-the-line Limited models. The 300C entered last year boasting best-in-class levels of horsepower and torque from its 5.7-litre Hemi V-8 engine, and 300C and Limited models gained a new interior color option. A Sport Appearance Package and a Chrome Appearance Package were made available for the Touring model, and we were treated to two new exterior paint colors in the form of Green Metallic Clear Coat and Ocean Blue Metallic Clear Coat.

Exterior styling

The one thing that mostly stays reassuringly the same each year with the 300 is the exterior styling, which is as unashamedly big, bold, brash, imposing and uncompromising as it's always been. This mighty car is famed for being a classic long-nose, short-trunk full-size sedan, and even though its relatively simple sheet metal has remained largely unchanged since as long ago as 2005, it still wears it better than most. Higher spec models feature a little extra aero trim these days, and those big 20-inch wheels fill out the wells in fabulously menacing, and not a very subtle way. The simple grille sticks to the mantra of a no-nonsense front end, and is an intrinsic part of the whole look of the 300 that makes us continue to love it as much as we always have done.

Engines and performance

Unlike many of its rivals these days, the 300 doesn't mess around with any of those puny four-cylinder engines. You can have an engine as "small" as a 3.6-litre V-6 under the hood, if you want, and it won't disappoint as it performs in a way that's anything but small. The 3.6 offers a very useful 292 horsepower and comes mated to a very modern eight-speed automatic transmission. But if you want the full Chrysler 300 experience though, it makes sense to plump for the 363 horsepower 5.7-litre V-8 which shoots this magnificent hunk of a car to 60 mph in just a little below the six-second mark.

Interiors

You may or may not see the Chrysler 300 as a true luxury model competing with the very best of Germany and Japan in the large sedan segment before you experience it, but you definitely will when you do. And that's especially the case with a 300 Limited or a 300C.
