What has two doors, available V8 power and plenty of all-American attitude? The 2018 Dodge Challenger, that's what. In a world preoccupied with self-driving, electric pods, Dodge's muscle car is a breath of fresh air. It's for drivers - and you won't forget it once you're behind the wheel.

Introducing the 2018 Dodge Challenger

For 2018, a new 840 horsepower SRT Demon model is added to the Challenger lineup. There's also a new SRT Hellcat Widebody, which includes bulged-out fenders and wider tires.

As for the rest of the Challenger roster, it remains basically unchanged. Trim levels include SXT, GT, R/T, R/T 392, and SRT 392. SXT and GT models are powered by a V6 engine, all others get one of four available V8s.

Design

The original 1970s Dodge Challenger is one of the most sought-after classics, not only because of its awesome power, but also- it's good looks. And like its forerunner, the latest Challenger sports a bold coupe roof-line, muscular sheet metal, and a prominent hood scoop. Unique badging and available stripes add to the vintage appeal.

Things are different inside the cabin. Instead of a retro vibe, the 5-passenger interior has been treated to modern styling and amenities. Occupants are pampered by available heated and ventilated seats, as well as dual-zone climate control. There's plenty of room for gear too, thanks to the best-in-class cargo space.

The interior of the SRT Demon model is unlike other Challengers. Since it's basically a factory-built drag racer, it's stripped of its rear seats. Though, if you must have them, they can be ordered for $1 (yes, you read the price correctly).

Performance

The Dodge Challenger nameplate is built on performance, and that tradition continues with the 2018 model.

Let's start at the beginning of the lineup. SXT and GT trims are powered by a Pentastar V6 engine (305 hp and 268 lb-ft). The two models are the only Chargers to be offered with optional all-wheel drive. An 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive come standard.

Next up, there's the R/T model, fitted with a 5.7L HEMI V8 (372 hp and 400 lb-ft). Both the 8-speed automatic transmission, and a 6-speed manual are offered. Cars fitted with the stick shift see slightly more power (375 hp and 410 lb-ft) than those with the automatic.

Then there's the R/T Scat Pack, 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker, T/A 392 and SRT 392. All these models share the same 6.4L HEMI V8 (485 hp and 475 lb-ft). That engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission.

Just below the pinnacle of the Challenger pyramid, you'll find the SRT Hellcat. This feline sounds ferocious - and it is. Power comes from a 6.2L supercharged V8 (707 hp and 650 lb-ft) hooked up to either a manual or automatic transmission.

Finally, we come to the most powerful Challenger of all - the SRT Demon. Rocket ship-like propulsion comes from a 6.2L supercharged HEMI engine (808 hp and 840 lb-ft) paired with a heavy-duty automatic transmission.

Technology

The 2018 Challenger has plenty of next-generation amenities, like the Uconnect infotainment system and a customizable digital instrument cluster. But, unlike most cars, it also devotes a lot of advanced technology to going fast. For example, there's available launch control for improved acceleration off the line. And to fine-tune your hot rod, Dodge offers its Performance Pages, which allow the driver to adjust the engine, transmission, steering and throttle response.
